PowerPoint Slide Design: it’s Simple!

Slides are always saying something about you. Busy and dull.  Cliched and generic? Simple and interesting? What ‘brand’ would you rather have?

As Leonardo da Vinci said, and who are we to argue with the man who changed the way we see the world –

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”

Short and to the point, don’t you think? But don’t confuse ‘simplicity’ with ‘dumbing down’. Yes, less is more or to put it another way :

“Simplicity means the achievement of maximum effect with minimum means.”   -Dr Koicha Kawana, artist, designer and architect

Keeping things simple is a real skill, but if PowerPoint slides you design are truly going to aid your presentation, a bit of thought is going to be needed. So-

  • Think about removing all the clutter (unnecessary bullets, logos, graphics, animations). Straightaway you’ll notice a big improvement.
  • Think about giving the message space to breathe (use white – or negative – space). Your audience will be able to see immediately what you want them to see.
  • Think clarity.  People don’t really like having to think any more than they have to.  Make it easy for them.  They’ll thank you for it.

Focus at all times.  (To put it simply).

This is a part of my Fit, Focus & Flair model. To be great, a presentation must be a perfect FIT for the situation; the content must have complete FOCUS on it’s purpose and message; and it must have enough FLAIR to stand out on the day, and in our memories.
