But it’s not true is it? As Pope was suggesting. Hope fades like a sunny morning, into a grey and drizzling afternoon. Particularly where presentations are concerned. I was at a conference last week, and saw a couple of great examples of the conference speech, and a few that were miserable wastes of time. The cruelest though, was the one that started brilliantly. I was live tweeting-
- She started brilliantly- an intriguing title, ‘The world is a niche’
- She started confidently- And I’ll prove it to you in the next 30 minutes…’
- The she apologised for her slides ‘I’m a very visual person, errr but I’m sorry there’s no pictures…’
- Which would have been OK if there’d have been other kinds of verbal, mental and poetic imagery.
- There wasn’t.
Which was a real disappointment. There was just 28 minutes and 30 seconds of bullet point, black on white drudgery. With no clear point. I left and had luke-warm coffee in the foyer.
And I realised that I was more disappointed in the speech because she started so well. But starting well is only the start, isn’t it?
